When you point the file(1) command at them, what do you get?
Example, where the prompt is : ;
: ; file mozilla-source-1.4.tar.bz2
mozilla-source-1.4.tar.bz2: bzip2 compressed data, block size = 900k
The file type may come up as something other than mp3.
