Here's what I do.
$ su
# du -kx / | sort -rn | tee /tmp/du.out
That creates a file in /tmp that lists every directory on the file
system, sorted by decreasing size. Look at the first 20 or so, find
the files you don't need, and delete them. Then delete the temp
file. (-:
