well... student prices are under $200 for office last I checked, however, it 
does also require some version of windows, which last I checked was $179, and 
ofcourse this not only requires that you have a computer, but it also 
requires that your computer meet the minimum system requirements for the 
software (this can mean upgrading the hardware aswell as purchasing M$ 
software).

Probably the computers in the labs have all this software on it, however if 
your taking an online class, this wont help much!

Thats a good idea. Maybe the instructor could atleast provide examples of what 
is required for results, if the same results can be accomplished with other 
software, then maybe that would meet the requirement.
