This is kind of a borderline question;

A disk was intentionally zero'd out using

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda

however the DOS fdisk utility couldn't rebuild the partition table afterwards.

Is it possible that the rather radical data-ectomy performed
might have damaged the low-level formatting of the disk?

I'm going over tomorrow to deliver some CD's of useful tools (knoppix and lnx-bbc)
but it would help if I knew the limits (as in if parted or cfdisk can't see the disk)
of what the damage could be...

As I understand it the factory formatting of the disk should be protected by the drive controllers firmware, but I have become cynical and suspicious and ready to assume the worst...

does anyone on this list have information, war stories or suggestions on how to diagnose and repair disk issues of this nature?

did find this http://www.sysresccd.org/download.en.php
while looking for resources, intend to use it, will give full report.
