I have a Gyration wireless mouse, and it works both via accelerometers
in mid air and as an optical mouse on a tabletop.  It's still too
sensitive in either location on the tabletop, so I turn down its
resolution in XF86Config using the Resolution option.

As for using the built-in trackball, are you using /dev/input/mice?
I thought that multiplexed the mice for you.
