I prefer pyton but is there a gizmo that will translate a url into an isp so I can run nmap on it and take it's os fingerprint?

nmap can do name resolution all by itself.

nmap -O microsoft.com

However, the problem with this approach is that the dns server may
return multiple ip addresses and most programs will take only the first
one.

Thanx for the code Bob and the tips from others. I felt like confessing that I am using this stuff to verify for myself that microsoft is using linux on thier servers. So it comes as a disappointment that nmap -P0
never does anything any alternatives?
