Hello All, my name is Chris. I have been to a few recent Thursday night meetings and
I am a volunteer at OPN.

I don't have much Linux experience, I am just starting out. I have a lot of Windows
experience. Not much apple experience either. (I am probably pretty useful for
helping with most any Windows problems, but with the Linux, I am not much help yet.)
I am about to start on a project to install Yellow Dog linux on an iMAC. I don't have
the specs on the iMAC yet, but I expect it is one of the oldest ones from 2000 or so.

I have downloaded the newest version of Yellow Dog, and some documentation on the
installation process. There is some possible problems related to the partitioning of
an apple hard drive and the current OS and other compatibility issues....I will
probably work on this a little this Thursday if anyone would like to look in.

I am also interested in understanding the overall flow of communications data traffic
through a typical ISP network (like EFN). I am interested in seeing an overall block
diagram of how a typical EFN dial up client connects to the internet and connects to
our servers and such. The components necessary and the upstream service provider's
services. After speaking with a few people, I have learned that EFN is in many ways a
"front end" for the upstream ISP. I am interested in studying this relationship. So
I plan on creating a "flowchart" diagram of the process if one hasn't been documented
already.

I am also interested in the Cisco networking course. I have a copy of a tutorial for
the Cisco course, it is in 4 parts and is developed with HTML and Flash so I think it
can run on anything. I have just started looking at it and it is very high quality.
Bring some blank CDs and I will have a burner on Thursday night.

Another project I am interested in working on is the Linux From Scratch distro. I
have downloaded the software and manuals. I have started, but run into some problems
because my basic linux is still so weak, but I am interested in building and
understanding the most basic parts of the OS and how the interact with the hardware.
I have also played with the Menuet single disk system and it looks very interesting to
me.

About 2 years ago I had a debian friend and he helped me set up a debian box with
Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc...for my own study. I have forgotten most, but I want to
work that way again soon and develop some PHP skills.

Most of my recent energy is going into installing and operating and exploring the
differences between distros. I have limited hard drive space so I am attempting to
install multiple linux distros on a single drive. I am having difficulties with some
distros booting and with some updating of LILO. I am interested in loading: Debian,
MEPIS, Knoppix, and Xandros on the same drive. I don't know the ins and outs, but I
noticed that when I loaded a version of Redhat on a previous install, it created a
small first partition (100 MB). This appears to be a boot partition for LILO and the
MBR and such. Then there were separite partitions for the redhat and the swap. I was
thinking that having a separite boot partition like that might be a good way to manage
a hard drive with multiple linux distros and multiple partitions, with all the distros
sharing the 1st boot partition and the swap partition. This configuration would be
for my personal use and training, with little secur!
 ity
issues as a priority. Is this a good or a bad plan and how do I make LILO see all
the distros and boot to any at each restart.??

In addition to all of this, I am currently studying and reviewing material for an
upcoming electronics examination. Most of my technical experience has been with
maintaining, calibrating and troubleshooting analog and digital electronics and test
equipment standards. So I don't have as much time for the other projects until I take
this exam, the date of which is still unknown.

Thats an overview of where I am and my interests. I have enjoyed meeting many of you
over the past few weeks, thank you for your hospitality and kindness.

Best Regards,
Chris
