With debian there is a package purge option, which
removes not only the package but the config files too.

If you end up stranded unable to find the config files,
you may resource to the package purge option.

However most user based config issues are kept in the .gnome directory.

And you may be able to move that around and get what you want done.

apt-get install gnome has gotten me gnome running on my knoppix system.
