Kino: http://kino.schirmacher.de/

Kino only works with DV files, i.e., the file format that is created with
firewire (ieee1396) captures. You can get dvgrab from the same site. Both
Kino and dvgrab work fine for me.

I tried to update to the current version of Kino a while back and have not
been able to use it since then. The newer versions require GTK2 (GNOME2) and
my distro did not have it at the time. I switched to Fedora and was not able
to get my Jog/Shuttle to work. So I am in the process of trying to get a
configuration that works.

I found it frustrating to use Kino without the Jog/Shuttle and really slick
with it.

Kino does not do a lot when compared to say Adobe Primiere but I think what it
does do it does pretty well.

Cinelerra: http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3

Cinelerra is a much more sofisticated program. It is slower and has a much
steeper learning curve. I have not used it much for these reasons and
because when I tried it it wouldn't work with DV formatted files. I didn't
want to go through the extra conversion step.

At the time I was much more interested in figuring out how to create DVDs and
Kino was working fine for me.
