One of our Corvallis Lug members has a cob hut in the middle of
40 acres with solar for power....

His only connection to the grid is his phone line, which he runs
DSL out of, and does a pretty good business hacking linux code out
in the middle of the woods.

% Well, Ken, you know what they say: Different strokes for different folks.

% Some people actually *live* "in the woods", and have telephones and sometimes even
% broadband. Some people run servers from "the woods" entirely off-the-grid.
 %
% At the Oregon Country Fair, where I represent our user's group, we have had 802.11b
% wifi coverage across the entire site for years, connected to a satellite uplink

% I don't know eactly what you mean by "communing with Natue": to some this means
% urinating or defecating, to others it means ingesting halluciogens; it could also
% mean taking a nice walk on a path, or driving up the paved mountain road in their
% SUV (possibly with a DVD playing for little Johnny). Since Per was speaking of
% mountaineering, it sounds like a superb idea to have some chance of communication
% in case of emergency! Go read about rescue teams' changes over the past years,
% the proliferation of cellphones and some new coverage into rural areas has made
% their job a whole lot easier. IIRC, they can even track a cellphone that is
% out-of-range but trying to connect, by its own signal (as opposed to central
 % network-based tracking).
 %
% And since you want to play the sarcasm game, I'll offer that I post to this list to
% get away from civilization :))
 %
% cheerio and smiles to y'all,
