hi alan and welcome to eugene!

local attractions of interest:

-Crater Lake: not exactly local but you gotta go at least once. it's amazing! if you hike down the trail to the lake you can take the boat ride which i highly recommend they take you out to wizard island it's all so unusual and beautiful. especially the color of the 39 degree water in the 2000 ft deep lake, that's truly amazing too. i think it takes a couple of hours to get up there maybe a little longer but well worth it! there are campgrounds available. i think the lodge can take years to get a room in. if you like to bike riding the rim or a portion of it is great but challenging it goes from 6-8000 feet in the 33 miles of road. my friend bill ran a marathon up there!

-Kentucky Falls hike: go west on 126 about 33 miles you make a left on a road (can't remember the name) go up into the coast range a few miles, up near roman nose mountain. the hike is only a few miles but it is GORGEOUS!!! beautiful water falls, quiet old growth forest, amazing! you can probably get better directions online.

-Spencer Butte hike: go out willamette street to around 53rd street, up the big hill you'll see the parking lot on the left. it's a nice hike to the top you get quite a view of where you live and it's a pretty hike!

-Oregon Country Fair: yeh go once. hippy disneyland, hippy capitalism at its most intense, lotsa barely clad youngsters and their friends. i chose not to support the fair since i am a professional musician and the fair practices most Unfair labor practices when it comes to entertainers and musicians.

-NICE BIKE RIDES: get yourself a copy of the city/county bike route map you'll have a ball! miles of great rides in all directions!

-McKenzie River: if you head east on 126 you only have to go around 10-15 miles to get into some really pretty spots on the river. nice this time of year. take an inner tube and float, kayak, etc.

-Cougar Hot Springs: also called terwilliger hot springs (officially), they are about and hour and some east of town up on highway 126 near Blue River. Gorgeous spot to sit in the hot pools and relax!

-Macready Hot Springs: east of eugene about an hour and some on the willamette highway (rt 58). very nice hot water. they're close to the road so not as well frequented or as scenic but i like 'em!

-Pioneer Cemetery: University St. and 25th Ave.: go walk among the graves of the pioneers of eugene including eugene skinner (the ferryman who the town is named for). good spot to walk dogs too.

-Art In The Vineyard: happening this weekend in Alton Baker Park. lots of art, music food, by the river.

-Rose Garden: the foot of Jefferson street. very pretty spot if you like roses. there's a huge black tartarian cherry tree that's probably 170 yrs old there too. the river bike path is a personal favorite of mine. you can do a loop of 7 miles of pretty flat riding off the street there.

i can probably think of more things but that should keep you busy for a while. the coast is only an hour west of here and the cascades about the same east and they are both spectacular. only 29 miles of the entire oregon coast are privately owned so there's tons of campgrounds, overlooks, etc. some amazing attractions: the 60 miles of sand dunes from florence to reedsport; the devil's churn north of florence, the entire coast between yachats and lincoln city. in the mountains there are huge black lava flows, volcanoes, many lifetimes of hiking and camping out there!

don't get fooled by these dry sunny days. most of the time it's gray and wet.

enjoy!

Greetings all,

Having just moved to the Eugene, after having gotten settled, I have a few questions. Replies on or off list are fine, thanks.

Any good recommendations for a local computer parts dealer? I notice the nearest Fry's is up by Portland (really cuts down on those impulse buys though)

I'm looking for a colo to stick a hobby box in, any suggestions? I'd prefer somewhere local before I go looking at the national places.

High Speed Internet has been somewhat covered on the list but it sort of devolved into an EFN/OPN thread. Currently on Qwest DSL. Going to see how it works out, but if anyone knows of a good deal going on, let me know.

Restaurants, local attractions, out of the way "You should go here" suggestions are always welcome.

And last but not least:
If anyone is looking for a Novell/Linux/Windows sysadmin, I'm currently available. =)

thanks in advance,
-alan
