Harrold,
        Im not sure what/why you need to be root, but sometime when I
need a gui app as root (while logged in as user) I issue su -c
<application name> (ie su -c /opt/kde/bin/kppp).
        If you want a root shell with root path and environment, then
issue su -  (yes, just a space and dash after su).
