2 hours for memtest isn't entirely overly optimistic. memtest86
is quite thorough and full testing takes time. Normally you'd
know something was really wrong with the RAM after the first 3
tests. As for very looong boot times I'd see how fast Knoppix
would boot with the hard drive disconnected. If it's up in 5 to
10 minutes I'd use the hard drive for a paper weight. 

Also, Gentoo on a 333? Are you nuts? Unless you're doing
straight binaries or using distcc I wouldn't think of it.
