Hullo. I'm the quiet, scruffy looking guy that was at the meeting last
night, (Sept 9th, for those of you who are indeed not clarivoyant). I
didn't take the opportuniy to introduce myself, so I will now. My name
is Bryan, I am 28, live in Eugene, and am a technology enthusiast. I
work in the office for an HVAC (heating and air conditioning company),
and my responsibilities include dispatch, network admin, gen. office
duties, as wel as any number of projects. At the moment my assignment
is rewriting the dispatch application that we use, which is
proproetary, extremely outdated, and extremely overpriced. It would
cost us several thousand dollars to update, and the tech support (via
phone) is something like $30 a *minute*, (which is necessary, as the
producers of this software purposely include no documentation, and
have made the layout and design, as well as the administration of this
application as cryptic and archaic as possible...). Anyways, I am
doing the dispatch system with Microsoft Access and Visual Basic for
Applications. Eventually, I am going to start work on converting the
whole system to L.A.M.P., as almost all of the machines on our network
are running old and abused installs of Windows 98. My coworkers are
open to giving *nix a go, but as I am the only one who knows whats
going on, I don't want to jump into that. So easy does it is the plan.
By the way, we can't update our workstations with any other operating
system, as the dispatch application we currently use requires Windows
98, and we don't know how to reinstall the application, and can't
afford the $30 a minute phone support.

But I digress... I was wondering if any of you, (I know that Linux
folk always have extra hardware, I know I do...) have an extra 17" or
larger monitor to either trade for (hardware) or sell. I can't afford
a new one, and I have a couple of web sites I need to design, and
can't on an 800*600 resolution.I have a lot of older hardware to offer
for trade, including a few switches, a could of PII complete PC's, a
few smallish HDDs (between 2-8G), quite a few PCI cards, as well as a
few AGP vid cards, etc... Please get back to me via the list, or my
email address (email address preferred). My email address is listed
below, just replace the words with the correct characters. (I know
this is getting pretty common, formatting email addresses like this in
public forums, but for the few who haven't yet seen this, the email
address is given this way to avoid being detected and harvested by
programs that search the internet for email addresses on forum and
mailing list posts, public profiles, web pages, etc... So just replace
the <at> with @, and the <dot> with .)

And last but not least,I just got a few more Gmail invites, if anybody
would like to try it. Just email me with your first and last name, and
email address, and I will send you a Gmail invitation.

Thanks everybody, and I look forward to being involved with your group.
Bryan
