(Sorry, I clearly missed the question by going too fast)

 My first inclination is not to open it up to the whole world,  
 but just to open it up to those that I want to.

 Why paint yourself with a target? 

 You can make it open to all the local folks that you care to
 and just restrict it to the people who you would care to.

 If you do open it up, I suggest you also want to monitor it
 and you also want to put some kind of bandwidth thresholding on it.
