Here is an update for anyone that cares.
While forcing the rpm installations and sym-linking the libraries was indeed fun, it ultimately did not work. It psuedo-worked. PHP told me mysql was all kosher, and my app did indeed install. However when db connections were actually attempted, that process would segfault and I had to examine apache's logs to even realize that this was occurring.
So back to the drawing board. Better efforts to google the problem ultimately proved fruitful. MySQL is aware of the incompatibility issues and has apparently released "compat" rpms which provide the .10 library version that I needed. Note however that I could not find these rpms on MySQL.org or on rpmfind.net. However, googling for the rpm name "MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-i386.rpm" eventually turned up a mirror that had exactly the file I needed. Now the installation is complete, via rpms, and everything seems copacetic... for now...
Thank you all for any insight that you provided during my times of troubles..
