Not sure exactly what you mean by things not breaking.  To the best of my
knowledge, all 2.4 kernels will occasionally have problems with USB 2.0
drives (someone forgot at least one timeout and some error handling code).
When this happens, the system will remain functional, except that
you will no longer be able to use your USB hard disks until you reboot.
I don't know of anything else that has problems under 2.4 kernels, so if
it is supported by 2.4, down grading probably won't break it, though some
bleeding edge stuff (like SATA)  may require a 2.6 kernel or the latest
2.4 kernels
