Could it be the motherboard controller itself? I have not used
USB hard drives yet but have never had trouble with USB devices
in general. I currently use a couple mice, couple keyboards,
game controller, card reader, camera, and printer all on USB.
Only thing haven't gotten to work at all is a webcam and only
partial success with a scanner but haven't spent much time on that.
