I dont know if ive seen anything like that... there are many in the 12" range,
infact, a nice one (averatec 3250h) is onsale $300 off ($699), its a real
nice machine (one friend did have a problem with the wireless shutting off
every 1/2 hour... ). When i was looking for a new lappy a year ago, I was
seriously looking at this model (well.. it was 3150 last year,...) I ended up
getting the 5100 because it was $400 and just under $1000).
Another nice lappy is the thinkpad, thinkpads work well with linux in general.
there are a lot of thinkpad users, and lots of thinkpad/linux info on the
web. you wont find a new thinkpad for $500, but you can get a used one for
way under that, and still get a decent machine.
I looked at walmarts computer section... they too have some nice machines,
many under $1k.

As far as battery life... heh! good luck! mine is supposed to run 5 hours, but
I can tell you, even when it was brand new, it never did 5 hours (except in
standby!) even brand new, it sometimes required AC before a dvd finished
playing(less than 2 hours). If I dont watch a movie, anything over 2 hours is
pretty good on this laptop.
Averatec does make a multimedia lappy that acts like a dvd player and gets 4.5
hours of playback, but i havnt tested that model... it may do it. Right now
its on sale at staples for $900. I tried a model simular to it, and i didnt
like it (its huge, bulky, and awkward...) I just didnt like it.

There is one at walmart that looks almost like mine, its a Averatec 5500, on
sale for $788. Ive never seen that balance brand before...

For what its worth, I wish I got an extended warrenty on this lappy, as
getting it repaired under warrenty is going to be a real hassle.

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the
grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin
charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what
they say if they had.
