backporting is the process of applying security fixes from new versions of a software package to older versions of the software.
It happens a lot in debian-stable and freebsd-stable because those projects are concerned with building stable systems of known components, but they still need up-to-date security. The general solution to this has been to use well-tested versions of necessary software and if necessary to import security fixes from later versions of the same software. Stability is a god thing, from an admin's position it can mean the difference between a good nights sleep, and a night spent at the terminal tracking other peoples mistakes. >From an owner's perspective, it means that while they may not have the latest features, the necessary work gets done, well.
