Yes, RAM just goes bad. Anything could cause it. Handling, minor
power glitches, heat. I've seen more than enough parts just quit
without warning. For CPUs and video cards it's usually a heat
thing. Motherboards go due to power problems and faulty/cheap
capacitors (think ECS/PCchips here). 

Download and run memtest86 and allow it to run for a few
minutes. Usually if you have a bad stick of RAM you'll know
within seconds of the program starting.
