FUD was, prototypically, the reaction to IBM's unanticipated
announcements by IBM's competitors, in the day when IBM mainframes were
called "Itty Bitty Machines"
Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt were justifiably the results in both the
micro and mini computer markets, to say nothing of the software market,
when IBM announced the Personal Computer, for instance.
FUD, currently, is the monopolist reaction to Linux, and especially
IBM's adoption of Linux.
What we're seeing from Microsoft and SCO is not the generation of Fear,
Uncertainty or Doubt, but display of all three in the form of frivolous
lawsuits and thinly veiled slander and libel.
I never thought I'd be cheering on the Nazgul of Armonk as they laid
waste to Caldera's and the Santa Cruz Operation's successors.
