I have a Magellan Meridian. It uses a simple serial connection to output NMEA 2.something. Works fine with gpsdrive mentioned in another post.
GPSBabel is a well-rounded program and works as advertised. I've used it convert back and forth from several programs with no effort at all.
My personal experience leads me away from Garmin. They tend to have better interfaces on their units, but battery life, and more importantly, satellite tracking are lacking.
