That command is helpful, thank you. I thought I needed to umount before I ran fsck. There's lots of errors. Guess I'll stop on the way to work and hope for the best...

Just wait a few days.  It will reboot itself, and you can have your
alibi ready. (-:

But seriously, it's been remounted readonly.  You should be able to
fsck it gently with fsck -f -n /dev/hda7.  If you see errors, then
you'll have to schedule downtime.  That's better than unscheduled
downtime.
