I finally got the chance to tweak these values.  My entries now
look like:
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth     24
    Modes     "1920x1200" "1280x800" "960x600" "640x400" "480x300"
  EndSubSection

I agree that 480x300 is a bit extreme, and I may delete it at
some point.  But what is interesting is that I didn't have to
do anything special, just modify the Modes line as shown and
they all worked.  About 10 years ago I remember having to make
lots of tweaks to mode lines that are no longer even listed
in the XF86Config file anymore.  (Now called XF86Config-4.)
Quite nice I must say.
