is your kernel compiled for i686?
It's the kernel(s) that run from the Live CD's. I assume that they're optimized for a general audience. Both Knoppix 3.8.1 and Kanotix-2005-02 fail in the same way at kernel boot. I should probably check the website for minimum requirements.
just a shot on the dark, but it can happen -> wrong optimizations.
300 MHz celeron sounds like one of the earlier ones. perhaps it does not support some command set (SSE?) that the kernel thinks it does.
