from inside Writer use the Insert menu choose Special Character
it will pop up a box showing the character map for the current special font.

this is using the openoffice-1.1.3 included with Ubuntu.

It may be possible to use one of the command keys (either the Apple Key 
or Windows Key) depending on your Keyboard settings.
