Given that the design is software (in the larger sense) any software license could be made to work. I would think that the creative commons family of licenses would be a fairly good fit to the problem domain. For the most part over the last century and a half we've been living in a world where most of the artifacts we dealt with came to us in a 'precompiled' format, and in the not too distant future (here already, unevenly distributed) we will be mostly dealing with transient forms rendered solid.
