Bob,
        Which model of Thinkpad do you have?  as far as Im aware, you need the
"bluez" packages.  apt-get "bluez-*".  That should give you "hciconfig"
if you don't already have it.  hciconfig without any arguments is rather
like ifconfig.  It should show any devices on the system.  but that is
all rather useless if the device isn't physically present.  Meh, I'm
jusy spouting off at this point.
