I think Larry's on the right track.
Try copying a pic from the camera using dd. Something like this.
dd bs=512 < /path/to/file/on/camera/dscn1234.jpg > ~/dscn1234.jpg
See if that gives you a good image.
Note to Allen Brown: tar is good. "cp -a" also preserves the date.
