HW is better, faster and more reliable. Also more expensive.

software raid can work ok for light duty applications, but you will
hit performance walls rather suddenly, and usually at the worst
possible time.

Generally speaking, if you are building a serious high performance,
line of business system; go with the tried and tested, SCSI w/ 1
channel per volume

I've had good experiences with Adaptec, but do your own research so
you know what tradeoffs you are making.
