Err, OpenOffice handles PowerPoint, just at a slower pace. Codeweaver's Wine makes Office play pretty nicely on linux since it's tailored for that.
If the laptop is old enough that it shouldn't run XP don't plan to run the newest linux distros that fast. Also, stick with an older version of MS Office is using Win98. Office 97 or 2000 would be best. For writing under linux I much prefer Abiword to OpenSlowness.. Office. Unfortunately, I don't know anything else that does Powerpoint on linux though. Dat be it.
