Signs point to a shift in strategies for long-term viability of the company. In addition to the competition by the free software database systems, Oracle is facing stiff competition from IBM DB2, which is used by SourceForge mainly because of the mutual marketting advantage of IBM (who also wants to be highly visible to the community) and VA (who wants to be taken seriously by large companies who might buy its SourceForge product.) Expect to see more concessions to hobbyists, students, and tinkerers from Oracle in order to increase mindshare among these people along with attempts to make Oracle easier to use and maintain than the alternatives. This kind of strategy is designed to make Oracle's product the database of choice for people's home home projects so that it will become the product of choice where they work simply because it's the thing they are most familiar with. The Oracle cannot predict how such a strategy will interact with the fact that the database products made by Oracle are all designed for really serious use when coupled with the availability of a very lightweight database for small projects or learning the basics of SQL in the form of sqlite. Precise motivations and chances for success remain cloudy. _______________________________________________ EUGLUG mailing list [email protected] http://www.euglug.org/mailman/listinfo/euglug
