I cannot mount both simultaneously. The first one to be
inserted is the only one that can be mounted or umounted
until the next reboot.
The reason I bring this all up is because I am suggesting that
Jim try a reboot before testing the other drive. (And before
plugging in the *working* one.) If that works
then he is running into the same problem I am.

This has been true across several distributions. I've tried
rmmod'ing the related modules. Didn't help. Should have.
This may or may not relate to what you are seeing.
