Actually, There is one standard in X. xclip is supposed to work for it,
but doesn't seem to for a number of us. Gnome and KDE both layer
additional functionality on top of that. The problem with the basic
"clipboard" buffer in X is that as soon as you highlight something else
the contents are overridden. In order to allow functionality that is
more like windows (IE, highlight something cand copy it, then highlight
something else, delete and replace it with the first data) the window
managers add a second buffer which is filled using a more complex means
than a simple highlight. This works well for the most part.
If you know how to make windows put the output of a command line script
into the clipboard without using the mouse than please tell me. I've
never gotten that to work. not that I've been using Windows much for
the last few years.
It looks like xclip may need an update. The last maintained date I saw
was 2003. It probably doesn't work with the Xorg stuff.
