If you setup  the drives using the 3ware BIOS as a "real" hardware array, it uses its own format. The only thing "Linux"y about the cards (AFAIK) is that fact they are engineered to work with it well. FWIW, I have built a few machines using escalades, and they have all been awesome. My most recent is a 1.7TB array (with hot spare) on an 8-port 9000 series and 2 hot-swap bays. Their tech support is top-notch too. Good stuff. 8)
