I'm in winslows right now and can't check. Before using linux cfdisk
and the like read the man entries. win 98 uses fat32 file system,
Which make a backup copy the of the file allocation table(FAT) , not all
utilities will keep the back up in sync, but windows sometimes checks
it. When it does and the are not the same results as I remember can be
problematic. I was bitten by this problem several times.

Well, Horst's /MBR suggestion (I think) got me by my Grub problem,
but now as
Well2, have you tried Horst's other tip :-) --quick cleanup with GNU
cfdisk:
"""
My experience is dated, but Windows (win tools) can have difficulties
erasing partitions of other OSes --use cfdisk from a Knoppix CD instead.
"""
I try and do FDISK and create a Primary DOS Partition I seem to be in
an endless "Verifying drive integrity" loop....
I said "I think" because when this booted last time I was trying to
get into the BIOS with DEL and F8 etc, so not sure if my keystrokes
somehow bypassed the problem or the trick actually fixed it...
Nope, at least I doubt it.
When the BIOS turns control over to *any* OS it needs to know where
to start. That location (on IBM-type PCs) is the 1st block of whatever
you select as bootdrive (HD, or floppy), and is fixed and reserved for
that.
Think about it, OSes are developed *after* hardware and BIOS are put
together. The hardware manufacturer tells the boot loader
'manufacturer' where to start. Then the bootloader may chose (or not)
which OS to start, and where to find the kernel on whatever device.
I have not seen a BIOS(on PC) that makes an intellegent guess about
what OS is good for you and then jumps to the entry piont of that
kernel... (but maybe there is?)
