The zauruses I've seen around burning man have been appreciated -- that was where I've seen the most of them.

The type of screen which uses ambient light to brighten its own image, which the zaurus and many other newer portable devices have, is high on my own spec-list for such a device.  If you'll only use it indoors this may not matter.  I think this is called transflective TFT, not sure tho.

For an SSH terminal, are you going to be satisfied with 320x240, or do you need more pixels?  -or will less suffice?

Unless you're stuck on a handheld, I would suggest also considering an older subnotebook -- there have been a smattering of micro devices spanning PDA and notebook over the years, something like an HP Journada (8xx?) maybe?

I've got a 5500 and use Outlook to sync to it. My Zaurus is running the
Zaurus OS v3. I tried out OpenZaurus, which was fun, but a bit frustrating
at  times. I put the Sharp-provided OS back on because I needed consistant
syncing with Outlook on my Thinkpad and I didn't want to spend too many more
hours toying with it. It works great now, except after syncing finishes, the
Intellisync software crashes - but it's only after all the data has been
synced (shrug).

I picked my 5500 up refurbished BTW - on geeks.com last summer - cost about
$200. I also have a Dell Axim X5, which I bought new at about $250 a couple
years ago. The Axim has a nicer screen and a little more power, but the
Zaurus has a built-in keyboard, and Opera instead of PocketIE (man if you
thought IE was bad...)
