We usually set all systems to run level 3. If we want an X-session at the 
console we invoke it with a startx command. Easier that way since you never 
know when your going to find a funky graphics board or flaky driver or have to 
use some terminal you dig out of the back closet... :) Also the ALT+F<?> works 
on most Linux consoles (whether or not your in x) to open another terminal 
session. In that mode <?> Is usually 1-4 with 1 being the default console.

As a side note: <Ctrl><Alt><F?> to get out of X. <Alt><F?> will
let you go from 1 to 6. 7 typically being your X session. 

On debian there's a tool called rcconf. Didn't see something
similar for Slackware though.
