At the risk of being too obvious, my question would be - when it's slow, do
you run around to different machines on the LAN to verify that they're all
slow and it's not just your workstation?

Okay....
I've written a script that logs traceroute output to a file and runs
every 5 minutes...
Analyzing the data trying to find a pattern is like drinking from a fire
hose, so I wrote a program to condense the data then I converted it into
a spreadsheet...
Then a graph shows that there *does* seem to be a pattern to when our
latency problems occur, though it isn't always the case.
Now I'll cross reference that with what might be going on under the hood
around this place just in case we have some errant cron job or something
blasting a billion letter "z"'s to the world or something....
Progress....
