Jeff,

Are you trying to get access to a Linux login prompt? or a GRUB
password prompt? or a system BIOS password prompt?

If you are trying to get past a Linux password prompt and have
physical possession of said laptop you can always boot the laptop into
run level 1 ( Single Users Mode ) and reset the root users password.
You google for "Linux GRUB single user mode" you will get a list of
instructions on how to do this. You can also google for "Linux LILO
single user mode" to learn how to boot the system into single user
mode from LILO.
