There are a lot of deals on dell right now... you can get a laptop for $399 + shipping.
Details? I can't seem to find that one....

I'd advise against a Dell laptop. Or, if you do get one, pay more for the extended warranty. 90-day warranties on laptops are a joke.

I had a bad experience with my Dell Inspiron 1150. On the 112th day it was dead as a brick and nothing to do with the warranty expired. I took it to the Mikes at Computer Base and they discovered the motherboard was dead. (And that the chip was a desktop chip not a laptop chip and burned hot, but that's besides the point.) After searching Google I found similar stories. I think failing laptops are fine -- it happens, but give them a decent warranty.

I ended up selling it for parts on eBay and my $550 laptop ended up being a big hassle and maybe $300 from eBay sales.

I put that $300 towards an iBook with a default 1-year warranty. :)
