FWIW, even mounting outside of the /mnt directory doesn't work.

No, that wouldn't make any difference.  /mnt is just a
directory.  Nothing special.

FWIW, this is Gentoo running Fluxbox. Ubuntu on the laptop
handles things fine via all the automount crap.
