I skipped the Ubuntu how-to and went back to FC4: still loading
packages, but better to solve a NIC problem then a RAID problem!
Swapped NICs too. I'll let you know.
Thanks a billion + a beer.

I think it's an Intel e100? Whatever Dell put in it originally.
Running `dmesg` reports:
e100: Intel(R) PRO/100 Network Driver, 3.4.14-k2-NAPI
e100: Copyright(c) 1999-2005 Intel Corporation
I've had mixed results with Netgear 310TX's: I've had problems using
more than one nic in a box, and conflicts with other devices. Most of
the time they work fine, but I've never had any problems with Intel nics.

You would have to say that! What NIC are you using?
Don't get me wrong. FC4 gets the windows file share, but sometimes it
takes for ever, if at all.
I think I\ll swap out a Netgear FA310TX for a 3COM 3C905C-TX and
reconsider FC4, if this
http://howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_ubuntu_5.10_p2 fails to help.

I gave up on FC4 or FC5, for the time being, due to Samba issues. I am
rebuilding the array now.

It worked fine with me using FC4, everything loaded perfectly without a
fuss. Samba worked perfectly too.
