So my question for anyone that knows about this stuff...

What happened to the "grace period"?
Who enforces the application of the grace period?

AFAIK, and I honestly haven't looked at issues like in depth in
_years_, so take a lot of salt, but as I understand it, the grace
period stuff allows for registrars to charge arbitrary fees to
"redeem" a domain, so $80 might be a good deal.

Yup, looked it up. Go google. see
http://www.icann.org/registrars/redemption-proposal-14feb02.htm . The
relevant bit is: "During the Redemption Grace Period, registrants
could redeem their registrations through registrars. Registrars would
be able to redeem the name in the registry for the original registrant
by paying renewal fees, plus a service charge, to the registry
operator."

It seems that ICANN is allowing these domain registrars get away with bloody
ransom and allowing them to break grace period rules.

According to my reading of the ICANN rules, these guys behaved
perfectly to the letter of the regs, though they certainly didn't
deliver what I think anyone could call reasonable customer service.
Being prickish and charging seemingly high fees, unfortunately,
doesn't necessarily mean they have run afoul of the rules.

Besides the above any suggestions? Thanks.

You've just got to stay on top of your domain reg correspondence. It
is just that simple.

In the past, I have had a "premium" mail service setup with a large
email provider. This particular account allows pop access and
automatic forwarding of messages to other accounts. This is basically
the "permenent" email account for things that I deem important, and I
set it up to copy all messages received at that account to the "real"
account I use regularly. I then have my email client to red-flag any
messages that are forwarded fro mthat account. This gives me a high
level of surety that I won't miss important communication on things
that matter, like domain registration.

However, with the features that gmail offers, I am beginning to
migrate to using an account there for the "permanent" account for
important stuff. It will save me $25 a year, and will quite likely
achieve the same goals.
