It's worth pointing out that most of the distributions out there are
Debians and Rehats that have been tweaked in some small way.  At this
point Ubuntu is several distributions all on its own based on what
packages are installed by default.

DSL with a few more or different packages than DSL normally comes with
might be ideal.  Personally, I am kind of liking the sound of Xubuntu
myself, but I'm a pretty big fan of XFCE4 which seems very clean and
effective aside from some bad habits taken from Gnome in the whole
you-don't-need-that vein, but I like simple interfaces that just work.
