Isn't that good for business though?  (ie, so business would want to use it)
And, strings only gives you a hint, showing only ASCII set matches, right?

Binaries can be obfuscated fairly easily, either to disguise original source or to give false impressions... if you've been computing for 10+ years you've seen this change immensely.
IMO it shows the shallowness of some engineering & product development cycles to see any violations caught by strings but I am glad for it.  Those lazy bums....
Someone should make a sourceforge [meta]project for analyzing proprietary code to scan for possible license violations -- it seems like the only way open source can keep up, since there's not as much money to pay both engineers and lawyers to take up the task.

Sorry I went all tangential again :P  and BTW, haven't seen any final or best word on the MS/ODF code issue...

It really depends on a few things:

1) Is Microsoft distributing their code under their usual draconian EULAs?

2) Is Microsoft's work a derivative of the LGPL work, or does it simply link to it?

3) Are they including information that the code, or that parts of the code, is covered under the LGPL?

4) Are they making all LGPL parts readily available as a source-code download?

Pretty much, as long as they aren't claiming that the LGPL code, or derivatives of it, belong solely to them, then they are not afoul of the license.  That's the thing that is sucky about the LGPL and why Ricky Stallman has been trying to get people to stop using it for the last 6+ years.
