I see that WinTV PVR 350 is $128 at Mwave. That doesn't seem too bad a
price. I just want to view OPB programs and maybe be able to save some
to DVD. Is this doable?
Is MPEG2 good enough to playback a Nature show with some quality? I'm
tired of the flaky video quality experience.

The latest MythTV (0.19) raves about the capabilities of the 350
(nice TV out). The 350 is the *only* Hauppauge card with
HARDWARE encoding and DECODING. The 150 and the 250 are the same
in features supporting only hardware encoding. I believe the 150
is just a cheaper PCB.
I'm hoping to *finally* setup a MythTV box with my ATI HDTV
Wonder in the next few weeks. My primary purpose isn't for TV
though since I don't watch the stuff. I'd like to be able to rip
my DVD collection and be able to browse and watch anything I
want with proper surround sound and a properly scaled picture
on my little plasma via VGA or Component input. Time will tell
if I get it done soon or not.
That be all,
Mr O.

I thought that benefit of the wintv-pvr model# 350 was also a
major gripe --
if I read right (disclaimer: somewhere, a while ago!) you can
*only* get
mpeg2 video out of this card... does anyone have one and know
if you can get
the raw video, to do your own encoding with? That is, as
opposed to
decoding the mpeg2 stream, then re-encoding it (yuck, with the
mpeg2
artifacts, although I guess you could set that to the highest
quality)...
so if this is true, it would depend on your desired usage.
NewEgg doesn't
seem to carry the 350, although they have various 150 models
($53-$85), with
and without remotes. Even a low-profile 150 model, nice!
Amazon has the
350 for $134. The model# 500 has dual mpeg encoders&tuners.
cheerio,
Ben
