I got the free version of Turboprint from their website. Heard anything
about that?

If you want a printer to work under linux get an Epson or HP.
Most of them work without any nightmares. I can't tell you how
many times I've never gotten my Canon to work perfectly. My HP
PSC 1315 though, there's a winner. Haven't tried the scanner yet
though. Typically only use it for the occasional photocopy.
Anne bought me a Canon S900 for Christmas a few years ago. I futzed
with it for a while, then broke down and bought a driver from
Turboprint for it. It works but is not network accessible.
Turboprint wants money per-host for their driver, so I schlep a lot of
Postscript files around.
The printer itself is very fussy and has a lot of trouble feeding
itself paper. That's probably not Linux-driver-related, though.
