I hope you will feel welcome on EUGLUG's mailing list; you should be able to find answers to your questions.
The mailing list does indeed have a little notoriety for being quirky & offbeat, all too often representing the
For example, typing "mount" at the bash prompt will show you what volumes are mounted -- I usually then type "df -h" to show human-readable disk-free information, which helps my brain correlate devices by space (used&free spaces, that is). If you see your flash drive listed, then you don't need to mount it (it already is, in that case). OpenOffice will not mount it for you, but knoppix might... if you have it plugged-in while knoppix boots up, I believe it might be mounted for you (same with your existing windows drive, which can be read-write if the disk is fat-16 or fat-32, while ntfs format was only safely readable last I tried).
Hope that helps get you started. There should not be anything about the file type, or file format, which needs to be adjusted. If the USB drive is causing more harm than good, you could always try web-mailing it to yourself :)

Dear moderator,
I received notice that you?ll be looking at my email inquiry about rtf
files and disks. So I thought you might want to know more about me.
I tried to go to the meeting last night to ask my question in person.
I sat in the parking lot at CCRC from 6:55 to 7:05 and did not see
anyone. I could not find on your website what meetings are at CCRC
and which at EWEB, or how to get ?upstairs? at CCRC. Judging by your
website, I will not understand most of the emails you send to each
other. I don?t need more email. I?d enjoy knowing how to get to
meetings, and to ask a few questions of folks who enjoy answering
them. Do you have a limited email list for that?
